Oceanics Surf School - Before You Surf

All our Surfing Instructors are qualified by the relevant governing bodies and hold Beach Lifeguard qualifications. We operate a ratio of 8 students to 1 instructor but where children's surfing lessons are concerned we have a tendency to add extra helpers to the surf lesson (trainee surfing instructors, Oceanics future instructors!) accompanying senior surfing instructors into the water. Children are supervised both in and out of the water at all times.

All surfing lessons are held in waist depth water so you do not have to be a very strong swimmer. We will work with you at whatever depth you wish to start off at, sometimes with groups it can be getting you used to floating in a wetsuit before you decide to start riding waves. Those that are nervous, have no fear, we will give you all the confidence and help you need to have a good time.

All our Surfing Instructors pride themselves on being people friendly and have endless patience when teaching people about the moving wave and how to feel comfortable and confident when riding it.

To book simply just email us or call us requesting which dates you wish to book. For surfing lessons or camps a contact phone number is all that's required. Checking in and payment is done 10 minutes before surfing lesson / camp times. You will be required to fill in a registration form which you can request to be sent to you in advance if you so wish. For Groups pre-payment is necessary with a deposit required to secure your date. For large groups a booking form will be sent and will need to be returned with deposit to secure dates. Payment can be made by cash or cheque made out to Oceanics Surf School

We provide all the surf equipment needed. All you need is a towel, a swim suit and sun screen 'cause remember you are in the sunny southeast!!. Our scheduled open lessons take place at least once a day and below is the general format;

Arrive at Oceanics Surf School base @ The Red Cottage in Tramore where you will be met and be welcomed. You will be asked to fill in a lesson registration form if you have not already completed one (just takes 5mins, not too detailed).

Those that are taking part in the surf lesson will gather on the deck for a safety talk and introduction to your surfing instructor.

All persons will be sized, given wetsuits, as well as booties, gloves and hood depending on the time of year. Change into wetsuits in allocated indoor changing areas.

Back on deck for Landbased instruction (A good time for photos). 15 minute lesson and it's time to hit the waves! Walk to beach 50m.

A quick practice on the beach and then together with the surfing instructor, everybody enters the water where the fun begins.

Back to base, shower off and change. Have the chat!!
